Sober curious ask: do I drink too much?
Playing the long game: an increasing number of people are questioning if life is better without the booze.
Just because you’re sober curious doesn’t make you an alcoholic.
It makes you a winner – a courageous person for confronting what most people won’t.
Making a lifestyle change around something central in your life is a big deal. Most people are too scared to do it because they don’t know what life looks like otherwise.
“How do I know if alcohol is affecting my life? Am I drinking too much?”
The scientific evidence is mounting. There’s no safe level of drinking. Conversely, if you take action and reduce your drinking, or quit, the upside is life changing with improvements in sleep, mood and energy.
Why people are sobering up
People, particularly younger generations, are questioning their drinking for good reason. They’re:
sick of hangovers
feeling drained
recognise they suffer hangxiety - that unsettling but hard-to-pin-point feeling of not quite being ‘there’
want more out of life
not sleeping well
moody
not as healthy as they want to be
not hitting full productivity.
Initially, we blame other factors such as the stress in our lives or other folk around us. People eventually ask:
Is alcohol a cause of what’s not going right in my life?
What would life be like without alcohol?
How would I give up alcohol?
Now that I think of it, am I an alcoholic?
What others say
When you stop drinking, people will react in predictable ways and want to know:
Are you an alcoholic?
Are you pregnant?
Jeepers, are you seriously ill, mate?
You don’t have to be an alcoholic to give up drinking.
Most people who start questioning their drinking are not alcoholics. They are just coming to the realisation alcohol is counterproductive to them living a better life.
That’s good enough reason to start the journey.

My experience
I questioned my drinking for decades. Call me a slow learner, but eventually I realised alcohol had lied to me.
Drinking didn’t provide me with any benefit and was cheating me of life. I questioned the relationship and dumped alcohol, as any abusive partner deserves.

Disclaimer
Many people can quit alcohol relatively easily and safely. But alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous and those with addiction issues should talk to their doctor about support.
